Patient: Cleo is a 3-year-old, 40-pound American Pit Bull Terrier mix
Diagnosis: Left rear limb shortage
Type Of Device: Jointed hock brace with open caudal section and paw lift
Case Report: Cleo was taken in by LaMancha Animal Rescue in January of 2022. Most of her history is unknown, but it is believed she was hit by an ATV and dislocated her left hip.
The veterinarian examined Cleo and found that the femoral head was now located dorsal to the pelvis. The veterinarian did not recommend surgery and Cleo did not appear painful while using the leg. Due to the dislocation, Cleo walked with a limp. Her left rear leg was approximately 2 cm shorter than her right and she had significant atrophy to her left thigh.
Cleo visited us for a hock brace in February of 2022. The hock brace was fabricated with a sole that made it easier for her leg to touch the ground. To make the brace as lightweight as possible, we cut a relief in the caudal section of the brace.
It’s been over a month since Cleo was fitted with her brace and she is doing very well. She wears the brace for 2-4 hours a day, when she is most active. She is fully weight bearing on the leg and gradually building muscle tone in her thigh.
Cleo is a small pittie with a big heart. She’s ready to find her forever home and smother her new family with all her love. For information on adoption, visit www.lamanchaanimalrescue.org.
